The Accurate List - First Accomplishment

“It isn’t that easy, Rashi. You sure these are the things you wanna do?” Sonal asked Rashi while reading her accurate list

“Yes indeed all of those, not a single one left out and before Pratham.” She replied

“Ok so gear up we have a lot of arrangements to do.” Sonal said

“Coming up first, the Royal Enfield. Do you know anyone who owns it?” Rashi chose her first task

“Yea, I do. One of my colleagues, Ronak.”

“Ok call him up and fix a meeting.”

“Aye aye captain…” Sonal called Ronak and explained the situation on hand; they met at an old cricket ground near Rashi’s house. Ronak was the perfect one to ride that bike; whether his moustache, his well-built body structure.

“What are you trying to do? Break me up with Pratham?” Rashi whispered to Sonal as Ronak approached them

“No, not at all. Well Ronak here my friend has a condition of his own, in spite of being a hunk, he is very introvert. So you got nothing to worry about.”

“Hi Ronak.” Rashi greeted him

“Actually he prefers to be known as Ron.” Sonal tried to create some conversation between them.

“No its ok, anything will do.” Ron said

“Umm so shall we start?” Rashi asked

“See there are some basics to be cleared, first of all helmet is must for your own safety, secondly you have to feel the bike and respect it. Then the technical stuff that is accelerator, clutch, brakes, and gears.” Ron explained Rashi about the bike.

“I’ll better wear this helmet thing, I know my ride is gonna get bumpy.”

“You are lucky that this one has self-ignition, just press this button and she is ready to roar.” Ron advised Rashi to start the engine.

“This is totally going on your weeding DVD.” Sonal’s excitement was full on as she turned on the recorder

“Ok so what should I do now?” Rashi asked Ron

“Grab the clutch and shift into the first gear. After the gear slowly release the clutch and accelerate.” Ron instructed while Rashi was on rider’s seat and Ron at pillion.

“Ok, gear shifted, releasing the clutch….” Before she could complete her sentence the bike took jump start and down they were in a flash.

“The accelerator! You forgot it.” Ron kind of yelled at Rashi

“Oh yea, sorry about that.” Rashi said while getting up

“That was amazing, both of you just flew.” Sonal was laughing while she was still behind the camera

“Now this time we will be going to do great.” Ron tried to cheer scared Rashi

She ignited the engine, put her in the first gear and did the same as Ron was instructing her to do. And it went more smoothly this time, until he asked Rashi to turn left, and she went right. Ron was prepared to go left so he was tilting towards it, but the bike went right resulting in misbalancing and they were biting the dust again. Ron and Rashi falling down while Sonal recording all of it. This went for quite a few days… meanwhile Pratham was on the way to his first one from the list with his childhood buddy Aarav…

They were cruising along the fields in the SUV, on their way to Leh, Pratham’s dream to go on road trip was coming to reality.

“Dude, this list concept where the hell you get it from?” Aarav asked Pratham

“It was with me from a long time, just waited this much to seek my partner’s permission.”

“Hah! Becoming a slave even before weeding? Not cool bro…” Aarav denied his logic

“It’s what you think, and Sir Aarav may I please draw your attention back to road and to fuel indicator also?” Pratham sarcastically pointed his middle finger at Aarav and then at fuel gauge.

“Sharks! We are running out of fuel. And you are telling me just now?”

“Chill car’s not stopping at this moment.” As those words left Pratham's mouth the car took a wobble and stopped

“Very well said Mr. Dude knows it all. Now we are stuck here.”

“It’s a busy road; we will manage to get a lift.”

There was no sign of any other human being there other than them. Stranded alone, between two mountains, they started walking cursing each other. After walking a while they found a village, where they somehow managed to sneak out a bike, paid the owner and left. Riding up and down the mountains, Aarav was busy in capturing memories for Pratham, and Pratham was the one doing all riding because they came to the conclusion it was his fault that there was no fuel left in SUV.

“Hey look, Pratham.” Aarav patted him

“That is what we came here for, The Lake.” He said

They have finally reached their destination. The lake was crystal clear, blue till your eyes can see. It was difficult to tell where the sky kissed the lake, there was no difference. There were some kids playing in the lake, Pratham jumped in and joined them. Aarav continued to take snaps of his best buddy’s dream coming true. After some joyful of time, he came outside and texted Rashi

‘Done…’

Surprisingly the replied came in an instance and it was the same.

‘Done… 9 more to go…’

On his way back he chatted, talked even skyped Rashi, but did not tell her what was his first accomplishment. He reached his hometown and asked Rashi to meet at the coffee shop they used to meet. He was waiting for Rashi, and there she came, riding the devil itself. She parked the Enfield and reached Pratham to hug him.

“Learned how to ride it… task number one completed.” She was bursting with joy of accomplishment

“Road trip done…” He showed Rashi pics Aarav took

“Yea yea well I am going to complete my accurate list first.” Rashi tried to show off

“We will see about that.” Replied a calm Pratham

The Accurate List- The Beginning

“I was new to the city, a friend of friend told me to stay with him. And I never had slightest thought that it could change the course of my life.” Pratham my fiancĂ© said... oh I was getting married? Yes I was, to this wonderful man.

“Pratham you do know that I am not gonna believe you whatever you gonna say next. I have heard it before, you and your friend were out for a walk, it was a new city you didn’t knew which place was right which was not. It was dark and all of a sudden a car stopped past by you. His driver was drunk, one of the passenger thought you guys were gay and offered you to hop in. You said no and escaped from there without turning back. That gets more hilarious every time. Oh you poor boy.” I leaned over him and kissed him. I always knew this story was his ‘I am a poor guy make out with me’ story, every guy have one. And every girl knows how to handle it.

“Listen I wanted to ask something.” Oh no has he got numb foot?

“What now?” I asked

“Rashi, we have exactly 10 months to tie the knot. And there are few things I wanted to do before I get married. So for sake of that I would like to ask you, Can I complete my Accurate List?” he said

“You and your crazy ideas. Now what are the things you want to do?” I asked him

“Oh that I will let you know after I had completed.” Surely we were so into each other that sun has been set far into the west and the moon was rising up and high. What a night it was, Pratham was the man my family set me up with. At first it was a bit scary, meeting a stranger and next thing you know is you are hooked up with him for the rest of your life. It made me go all nuts, but I started to like the person, and Pratham was the one now whom I will see every morning right by my side.

“Oh Rashi that is so awesome, we should completely do something like this also.” It was Sonal’s reaction when I told her about Pratham and his ‘The Accurate List’

“What nonsense, I am not going to roam here and there to do stupid things.” I replied nostalgically

“But wouldn’t it be fun?”

“Yea it will be fun, getting drunk, riding bike...”

“And now look at someone’s stupidity gone?”

“I am gonna call Pratham and challenge him to complete his list before mine.”

And then I called him and did what I have to… the race was on, 10 months, 10 crazy stupid things to do, and hell of a story to tell.

Which list will be accomplished first? ‘His Accurate List’ or ‘Her Accurate List’?

The Burger Joint - Everything Coming Together

Ishita took the photograph from wall, kissed William, and her tears erupted.

“Martin we are not supposed to talk about William anymore. Did you forget that?”  Ishita asked Martin misbalancing, holding on to the table in disbelief.

“Sorry Ishita here this guy seemed nice.” Martin said pointing me, and this was the moment I learned her name was Ishita.

“Do you even know his name? He’s a complete stranger, and I don’t want Mary to get hurt again.” Ishita was disappointed.

“Hello Mam, I am Bruce. I am a regular here.” I tried to convince her that Martin wasn’t doing anything wrong he already opened up his life in front of me and now he was going to reveal truth about William.

“I don’t care who you are, can you please step outside the room.” She requested me

“Mommy! Jack is not going back into the box.” A little kid ran out of storage room and hugged Ishita with jack in the box I his hands.

“Junior just a second… Here you go.” She resolved her son’s situation.

“I better run, I have a meeting to attend.”

Throughout my rest of the day, it kept reoccurring to me; my brain storming was in full swing but wasn’t yielding any positive outcome. William was there no more, that’s acceptable if Mary was still in belief that he will come back again, Ishita’s pale skin with a look of no blood in her, but one thing wasn’t clear why Mary was drifting apart from Ishita and her son? I went to the burger joint later for my evening snacks.

“Sorry for that inappropriate behavior earlier.” Ishita came up to me

“Hey it was called for. I was acting too much of a poking person there. It was none of my business.” I looked at her, eyes drained out of tears, face with no life left in it.

“You know after William left us I haven’t talked much about him with anyone.” She said and I knew where she was going with it.

“He got his call from the colonel the same night when he had proposed me to marry him on the surprise lunch he prepared for me, right there in the kitchen.”

“So he was in army?”

“No he was a marine. He made me pancakes that time, and he was really terrible with that.”

“But why you are telling all of this to me?”

“After you left in the afternoon, my son asked me was you his dad?” I nearly spilled my coffee over the table while she said that.

“Ummm.. I think I must leave now.” I said wiping the residue sandwich has left on me but she continued

“It was all so perfect, all the pieces were falling together right into their places. Finally William and I were going to get married, Mary was so happy she gave free meals that day. Mary was the one happiest amongst us; she always wanted me to be the part of family.”

“Then why she’s so changed now? Yelling at everybody? Always so miserable?”

“She thinks what happened next was all my fault. That evening we spent a quite amazing time on the beach house. Until that door knock happened. William got up from the bed and reached the door only to found out that it was his call to serve the nation. He came back with trembling hands; I saw the letter and asked him” as the words continued to reach my ear drums, I fell in to imaginary world again. I was standing right there in the beach house with Ishita sitting on the edge of the bed and William on his kneeling in front of her.

“Honey its time.” William said

“How much do we have?” I asked him

“Not enough to go to church and get married.” He replied in sorrow

“Hey Will it’s not the right time to get into the blues. I will be here only, waiting for you to come and get married.” I tried to cheer him up

“Come hurry up we are going to get married before I leave” he said but the weather has different plans. It started to rain cats and dogs, with Zeus striking lightning bolt down.

“No Will it is not what we are going to do. We are going to burger joint and meet Mary and you are going to spend some time with her.” I got up and get dressed. We reached Mary, William hugged her. And she knew something was wrong.

“Mom, I have got the call, I am going tonight.”

“You mister are not going anywhere, now it’s not only me for whom you have to care, Ishita is also on that list.” Mary resisted accepting it

“But you know it’s inevitable for me, if not today it will be some other day. I will have to leave.” William said and with this another lightning struck the ground

“But it’s all I have got. You are the only important thing in my life.” Mary said

“We have gone through this many times before mom, and this was the day we have been preparing for.”  William said hugging her

“Oh that’s bullshit. I don’t want you to go away from me.” She burst into tears as well as the clouds outside, it was pouring hard as if Mother Nature was also against this separation.

“I will be back, I promise, and I will make you happiest woman in the whole world.” William said to Mary

“And you the second most happiest.” He said while group hugging both me and Mary

“I love you Will.” I said

“I love you both William and Ishita.” Mary kissed me

“Martin, will you take care of my girls while I am out of town?” William asked Martin

“Dude you don’t have to worry about it.” Martin replied with a strong voice suppressing his emotions

“Ok you stay here I am going to get my bags, the pick-up would be here any time.”

I was standing on the roof in order to get a longer glimpse of William, rain drops rolling down my face mixing with tears. I waved William goodbye with a smile. I can’t even remember when my smile faded, until how much I waved to him seconds? Minutes? Hours? I just know he left me this note, and beautiful son to live with…

I am lost without you, I will always be near you to make sure you are alright.
Love,
William

“Bruce? Were you even listening?” Ishita shook me off my imaginary world.

“Yes I was, I was just thinking why Mary hates you?”

“She blames it on me; she thinks I was unlucky for William. The day I came into his life, his life was in jeopardy because of me.” Ishita said

“I am really sorry to hear that, but you should be proud of William. He gave his life protecting all of you.” I said getting up

“Thank you for hearing me out, it felt nice.” Ishita said

“Farewell…”
I got out of there and reached my car. There it was laying on the seat next me, letter from marines stating that William never reached the post which he was supposed to reach. His pick-up got trashed into a train before even reaching the destination, and there were no survivors. I was asked to convey this message to his family years ago. But never got the courage before to confront them, and I gave up, it was unfair to crush their dreams. William was a hero in their eyes, and I didn’t wanted that image to fade away and William Jr. to know his father died even before thinking to die for country.

The Burger Joint – The Back Room

“She was much saner before her son had left. Old lady is neither taking a day off, nor letting us.” Martin was constantly babbling about Mary and I was still gazing at Ishita.
Her messy curls, comatose eyes, skin pale like the blood have been sucked out of her, shaky hands.

“Dude your shirt, it’s gone useless.” He snapped me out of my imaginary world where I was wondering about Ishita

‘Oh sharks! I have a meeting in half an hour.’ Is what I should have said, instead I got up and reached Mary breaking up the queue at here cash counter.

“Hey Mary, who is she?” I couldn't resist myself anymore; I know I ought to be less curious about things that doesn't affects me, which indeed is nowhere near wrong according to the trend of today’s youth philosophy? Anyways, who am I to play the blame game here back to burger joint.

“She is just another customer here, and nothing else. Why are you putting your nose in everybody’s life?” Mary yelled at me again and it didn't bother me, man I have gotten used to it already.

“Hey you there, take the shirt from back room. Go and help the poor fella Martin.” The janitor said pointing towards the door at the corner.

“Here take it, all cleaned and ironed.” Martin said

“Thanks, it will help. I have a meeting coming up.” I said while trying to sneak up to another room which was labelled storage room but was open somewhat and I caught the glimpse of a little kid in there

“Yea and that’ll be 100 bucks. Don’t worry just kidding.” Martin tried to stop me from going any further near storage room.

Feeling the awkwardness I asked Martin “So how do you end up working here?”

“I was a teenager when I stepped first in this city, snowy day; the storm had just left the city. Every motel was full, and I didn't have any money back then. I was hungry when I found this place. Mary was having a tough time that day, lot of customers, small toddler William. I offered her help in serving meals in exchange of my own meal, she agreed and here I am still serving for my meals.” I was about to doze off but thankfully martin stopped talking, and offer me some water.

“Whose photos are those?” I asked pointing to a wall full of photographs

“Oh those are of William's.” he replied

“Can I have a look?” I moved closer without waiting for his permission

“So that’s you, and that’s Mary, and this must be William.” I confirmed pointing a guy in the uniform

“Yes he is William.”

“And who is she? She seems familiar.” I found a picture of William hugging someone

Before martin could answer someone came out from the storage room, where I saw that kid playing and laughing. And that person cleared out the picture who William with, in that photo and why Mary yelled at me when I asked about Ishita.

Yes it was Ishita who was playing with the kid in there; she was the one with William in that photograph. And I suppose Mary did not approve her relation with William in the past.

The Burger Joint - The Man She Was Waiting For

I continued to go for my meal there, as is was near my office, lunch and evening snack were accountable for Burger Joint only. And as expected the old lady continued to check out the door. This activity made me curious, and day by day my curiosity level got higher. And one day, I decided to go up-to her and asked...

“Hello mam, how are you?”

“What do you want? I don't have any openings here; neither do I want to donate anything. And also we don't give free meals here.” she yelled at me and oh boy I got to know what others felt when she howl at them.

“Nothing about all you mentioned, but wanted to ask you something. Can I?”

“Go on and be quick I have lot of other things to do.”

“Why do you look at the door every time the bell rang and door is opened? And I know it's not because of you caring about customer, it seems you are waiting for someone.”

“That Mister is none of your business.” She freaked out a little and continued to shout at me.

“I am sorry if that hurts you, I was just being curious, that's why I couldn’t control my urge to ask.”

“Well you know what nobody ever sensed that I was waiting for him. How you did it?”

“I just had a feeling, that’s it…”

“He promised me to come back. He promised me no matter what would happen he will come back.” As she started talking I also started imagining the scenario

“But you know it’s inevitable for me, if not today it will be some other day. I will have to leave.” The man with dusky voice said and with this another lightning struck the ground

“But it’s all I have got. You are the only important thing in my life.” The old lady with younger voice said

“We have gone through this many times before, and this was the day we have been preparing for.”  The man said with a heavy voice now

“Oh that’s bullshit. I don’t want you to go away from me.” She burst into tears as well as the clouds outside, it was pouring hard as if Mother Nature was also against this separation.

“And that’s all I remembered from that night, he left me standing out right there.” The old lady said pointing the porch.

“But who was he?” I asked with a heavy heart.

She reached her drawer and took out a badge with the name William Mary Watson.

“My son Will. And I am sure my homeland is proud of him, I lost William couple of years back but still I have felt his presence here.”  Mary cried

So she was waiting for his son who had been to the war and died for the country. My feelings changed from pity to respect. Since that day, I was a regular customer of The Burger Joint, where I noticed many other souls searching for one thing or another.

But the next encounter I had was with Ishita, another regular customer whom I noticed when I bumped into her, and she spilled coffee all over me.

“And there she goes again, this girl can never handle herself, Martin go clean that mess.” Mary shouted in the background from behind her counter.

The Burger Joint

The Burger Joint Part-I

The bell rang and her old tired eyes searched the door in pursuit of him. It was her daily schedule, sitting behind the cashiers counter, checking every person who's coming in. Initially it didn't bothered me, as she was the owner and held the right to mentally examine the customers. But later I realized it isn't normal and I begun to observe her.
"No I don't have any change, you want your burger or not?" She yelled at a school girl
"One veggie burger for dine in" and yelled again at her chef
"Old lady ain't gonna let anyone take it easy." The waiter murmured while serving me my meal
Few days went like that only. The usual yelling, followed by more. One thing I discovered that every time door opened and the bell rang, no matter what she was doing, at whom she was yelling she used to forget everything and freeze in anticipation.
"Is she expecting someone?" I asked the waiter in vain
"The old lady? Yea she is indeed. The man who said he'll come again after that stormy night few years back." He replied
Oh her secret love? Who was he? Should I ask her? Those thoughts kept coming to me as I left...
